For questions about cup-and-cone type hub bearings (as opposed to cartridge bearings). Cones form the part of the bearing that is fixed to the axle, while the balls support the hub (the cup part) so it can rotate. Cup-and-cone bearings are simpler, but can be trickier to tune to optimal performance. Because of the narrow size and tight clearances special wrenches, called "cone wrenches" are used to adjust the cones.
