## Hub Skewer

A metal rod with a clamping mechanism that attaches the [hub](https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/244/terminology-index/3404#3404)/wheel assembly to the fork or frame. Many skewers are equipped with a [quick-release mechanism](https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/244/terminology-index/404#404) that allow removing the wheel without tools, facilitating changing a tire, putting a bike in the back seat of a car, etc. Unfortunately, the trade-off for easy wheel removal is that it's easier for thieves to remove a quick-release wheel. Skewers without a quick release will use a hex or Torx wrench for removal. It is also possible to secure the wheels with [axle nuts][1], many of which use a crescent wrench of appropriate size.
