I strongly advocate NEVER using gasoline as a degreaser. It has high 'flash' flammability as well as high contact and inhalation toxicity. The risk isn't worth it. Spend the extra dollar on a nice citrus degreaser.
You also need to remember that every time you drop it, smack it into the door, toss it at the bed and miss, it gets 'dinged'. Over time all of these little collisions add up.
"Degrade" does not mean the same thing as "Decompose". Most man made materials take decades to decompose (break down into their component elements), but only a few months or years to degrade (become significantly weaker or structurally deficient).
@zigdon - some do and some don't. In the US at least there is a standard for distance and angle for reflective visibility and many rear lights don't meet them, especially the ones sold in some large department stores.
