But (probably combined with the location) it does appear to limit thefts to those that can be carried out quickly

May 8, 2018 at 17:34 | comment | added | Chris H | @stijn some good ideas there. I reckon I could sort the mud out with a 10 minute ride from here. And this might be a good time to try some extra mudflaps - made of scrap
May 8, 2018 at 16:38 | comment | added | stijn | Briefly submerge the bike in a puddle of mud. Or make mud in a bucket and empty it over the bike or 'paint' parts with it. Tape the whole thing, then spraypaint. Get an old frame, cut tubes in half, bend them over current tubes. Or continuing with the seat replacement idea: remove the current fenders and replace them with old worn ones from another bike (still fully functional, but if old and dirty enough they'll destroy the look). Take out screws, replace with screws with rusted heads (just the heads, preferrably). Use old worn grips. Etcetera, etcetera.
May 8, 2018 at 15:56 | comment | added | Chris H | @T_Bacon the beater is significantly slower, and I have an A-B-C journey in which the earliest I an arrive at B is an hour and 23km before I'm due to get a train at C. It's just doable on the hybrid. I normally park outside but with CCTV so a decent lock is enough, but this is different
May 8, 2018 at 15:53 | comment | added | Chris H | @Diado you might be onto something there. I've got one on an old beater I'm breaking for spares. It's not as bad as it looks and for and hour I can ride almost anything. (if you make that an answer it can get some votes)

May 8, 2018 at 13:54 | comment | added | Diado | Dodgy, ripped and heavily worn saddles often add a certain "look" to a bike. Perhaps pick up a cheap as chips one and give it some abuse, then swap it back to your pristine, comfortable one after the couple of weeks are up? Assuming you can stand riding it with said dodgy saddle, of course.
May 8, 2018 at 12:58 | comment | added | T_Bacon | Carefully! :) A bit of soapy water, a sponge and some elbow grease should do it. In reality it will be very difficult to achieve the look you're after without it either being somewhat obvious or actually damaging the bike to permanently disfigure it. Ideally you would find somewhere reasonably secure to store your bike or be able to bring it indoors. I appreciate that's not always possible though. If I was you I'd just take the beater and make it work for the couple of weeks required.
May 8, 2018 at 10:59 | comment | added | Chris H | @T_Bacon possibly. I don't want to find myself asking how to get the glue residue off without damaging the paint!
May 8, 2018 at 10:34 | comment | added | T_Bacon | Lots of duct tape?
