I prefer balance-bike style, like you seem to (based on when my freehub died); when I've converted pedal bikes to balance bikes for tall kids I've taken the cranks off too, but that's even less likely without a workshop

Worst I have had was having to get out about 10km forest roads with a frozen freehub. I have used the getting towed out option as well during an adventure race.
Apr 25, 2023 at 11:42 | comment | added | Criggie♦ | @Ifor Are you thinking of a balance-bike style? Agreed the pedals would get in the way there. However I would scooter with my right foot on the left pedal, and my right hip pressed into the left side of the saddle. I push against the ground with my left foot, while steering and braking normally.

Jan 24, 2019 at 10:43 | comment | added | Criggie♦ | I once broke a cup on the side of my bottom bracket, and lost all the bearings on that side. I reasoned that scootering 5 km was okay because the BB axle was fine with no bearing surfaces touching anything, and the cup needed replacement anyway.
