Jan 26, 2022 at 16:26 comment added Chris H @Carel even if you landed on you back the polystyrene wouldn't hit the ground on mine because it's tucked in a bit - but it's there. Except on the damaged one I keep under my desk in work as better than nothing (mainly for enhancing visibility TBH as it's bright white). That's a hard shell so slightly different
Jan 26, 2022 at 16:06 comment added Carel @ChrisH: Except for my very first helmet that was cloth covered polystyrene, none of my helmets had or has naked poly surfaces that could come into contact with tarmac. Every outside surface is covered with anti-friction foil.
Jan 25, 2022 at 14:56 comment added Chris H Besides, given the range of surfaces on which you could come off, the shell is unlikely to be optimal for friction anyway, and shells aren't all the same material, so short of sticking on grip tape, I really can't see a problem
Jan 25, 2022 at 14:56 comment added Chris H @Carel on the back of a helmet there's often exposed polystyrene anyway, i.e. no anti-friction shell. You could stick the tape there, or where it would be, which is very unlikely to hit the road and well-placed for visibilty (if a little high). I'm happy to attach lights and even sometimes reflectors to my helmets, considering that overall I'm safer for being more visible - but don't attach too strongly.
Jan 19, 2022 at 21:14 comment added Criggie @Carel that is quite correct - the lack of friction between the outside of a helmet and the ground is important. There may be recesses in the helmet structure/outline that would be better.
Jan 19, 2022 at 18:40 comment added Carel I'm always rather reluctant to stick anything to helmets because it modifies the surface and the way the helmet is going to slide more or less easily over the road in the event of a crash resulting in deceleration other than intended by the manufacturer.
Jan 19, 2022 at 10:55 comment added Chris H @StianYttervik if applying paint I'd make a mask and apply it to a fairly small area (e.g. low on the back where breathability is less of a concern). Also the sleeves. Cut from plastic film the mask could be re-used if a top-up is needed - I've made stencils like this before. Or take it to the next level and buy a mylar stencil with a design of your choice . This would look pretty nice in black on the back of my reflective jacket (and that feels like a plastic bag anyway so I'm almost tempted)
Jan 18, 2022 at 23:43 comment added user36575 second the tape recommendations. We run it all over the bikes, especially on fenders and on high-viz helmet. I get oralite (brightest tape available, IIRC) online here (findtape.com/…) I mention this because this tape if FAR brighter than every other commonly-available tape I've ever used. This oralite (findtape.com/…) can be sewn on clothes, but of course not a rain jacket unless you seam sealed after.
Jan 18, 2022 at 14:07 comment added Stian beware though, paint will certainly reduce the breathability of the gore tex at area of application. (But then again; so will most types of after-market applied reflective ideas like wearing a vest)
Jan 18, 2022 at 13:04 comment added Rеnаud @AndyP And DWR must also be applied on a regular basis, how would reflective paint impact the application/effectiveness of DWR in the future? I'm maybe too careful, but if I purchase high performance garments, I prefer to be in line with the manufacturer's recommendation to maintain the performance over time. If the result of such operations is to clog the gore tex pores with reflective paint and limit the effectiveness of DWR/Gore Tex membrane, better off buying a cheap high visibility jacket instead.
Jan 18, 2022 at 12:16 comment added Chris H Given how much kit (e.g. panniers) has white reflective stuff facing backwards, I wouldn't worry too much about adding a little more, so long as there's plenty of red as well and/or you always use your rear light (which I do because they're dynamo powered)
Jan 18, 2022 at 12:14 comment added Chris H I've got spoke reflectors, and the cheap aliexpress/ebay ones aren't as good as the branded ones - they're just DOT tape on a plastic clip and the tape comes off. However much you pay they seem quite willing to fall off over time.
Jan 18, 2022 at 11:52 comment added Andy P Wonder if the spray works on goretex or if it beads up on the DWR and runs off? Tried to google an answer but didnt get very far
